The Cyclades Drawing Center

Saving The Negroponte Mansion

The Cyclades Drawing Center is envisioned as a unique cultural space created for the purpose of supporting and promoting contemporary drawing, showcasing works on paper as a dynamic means of artistic expression, contemporary culture and creative thinking.

The Cyclades Drawing Center is both an exhibiting and a collecting institution. It will explore a vast array of media, including drawing, watercolor, collage, and other related practices connected to visual art and the support of the paper.

The Cyclades Drawing Center will be the home of a permanent exhibition of works by established contemporary both Greek and foreign artists, with a view to constantly enriching and growing the collection.

The Center will be hosted in the iconic Negroponte Mansion, a Neoclassical building in Hermoupolis Syros island, built circa1860,  owned by Agios Nikolaos Orthodox Church in Hermoupolis which will undergo restoration  to its initial condition under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture.

The Cyclades Drawing Center is the only not for profit entity solely devoted to the practice of drawing in Greece, providing a resource to study works on paper, their history, and methodology.

The Center will devote its resources to exhibiting and collecting works on paper. It will provide a number of services to the community, including lectures, internships, workshops, and classes, as well as hands-on experience to students from the Department of Product and System Design Engineering of the University of the Aegean and a large range of Academic Institutions in Greece and abroad.

The restoration of the Negroponte Mansion to house the Center will have the dual purpose of salvaging and paying tribute to an exceptional historic example of urban residential architecture while making it available to the local and visiting community for the first time.

The Center’s Activities:

  • Periodic exhibitions

  • Specialized training programs and  thematic workshops for artists

  • Residency programs supporting the work of artists, curators and creative professionals

  • Art Scholarships

  • Educational programs and workshops for students, teachers and the public both online and with physical presence

  • Public art sessions

  • Cooperative modern art projects for the local community

Moreover, its activities will foster original synergies between painting, drawing, and other arts, interacting with education, architecture, literature, theater, cinema, music, photography, choreography, technology, industry, science, etc. Protagonists and stakeholders in this endeavor will be established and known artists, musicians, dancers, filmmakers, writers and poets, academics, and scientists from Greece and abroad, whose work and outlook align with the objectives and values of the Center.
